Fashion Trends of 2012

2012 revealed most of its trends, its clothes and its accessories. Let's take a look at what's in fashion now. What colors and shapes should you wear, what patterns and textures are in vogue and what should be on your shopping list this year. You do have a shopping list, right?

The runways were more colorful than we expected. Neons and bold solid color pieces were all-over. We recommend to stick with three colors unless you are Henri Matisse and you have an excellent eye for combining them. Yellow against blue is an old theme that seems to haunt the fashion world. You can also wear a single color wrap dress or a one-piece suit with a sharp tailoring as long as the color pops out. This trend will add a quick energy boost to your wardrobe.

If you are more into the earthly tones like beige, ochre, cooper, olive, blush, eggshell, gray and chocolate brown don't worry cause there's something for everyone this season. These colors are easy to wear and can make a simple outfit look glamorous. Scarlet lips and a beige dress add a modern accent to nostalgic glamour looks of the 50's. Anything from soft flesh-tone hues to browns and even pale pink can look charming and are easy to combine with other strong colors since these are neutrals and contrast will always be a chic choice. If you don't want to look washed-out wear a feminine, soft makeup but enhance your eyes or lips. What I love about this trend, is that it can be worn all year long, it is cool and effortless.

As spring rapidly approaches, the nature and the runways are flooded by flowers. Flower prints are for every girl that is embracing a feminine aesthetic. So, if you are in this category think of a way of adding this trend to your wardrobe. Whatever you choose from dresses and skirts to leggings, coats, hair pins, umbrellas, shoes, bags or bangles, there are plenty of opportunities to look amazing and add some flower power to your look. Many brands paid homage to flowers: Blugirl, Matthew Williamson, Tory Burch, Iceberg, Peter Som, Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, Stella McCartney and Jason Wu, to name a few. Finally the masculine look has been replaced by femininity, bringing back a gentler and more soft attitude. It was about time, don’t you think?

The strong geometric patterns and gallant, architectural shapes is bringing the fashion world back to the future. Even if you are not quite ready to abandon the fluid materials and make room for dramatic cuts and exquisitely constructed garments, what is great about fashion nowdays is that you can keep both and still be in fashion. The diversity in trends is overwhelming. Geometric pieces are eye-catching and fun. Sometimes they seem to take inspiration from the very ancient roots of civilization, while other times they seem to be at least 100 years before our time, looking conceptual and futuristic. Fashion designers transformed themselves into architects, taking inspiration from a vast number of sources. When I think of this trend, pencil-leg pants, high-collar shirts or v-neck clevages, sharp tailoring, crisp lines and reppetitive patterns come to my mind. Consider giving bold geometric prints and cuts a go this season; you won’t regret it!

All right girls, let's go dotty this season! This look is absolutely everywhere right now: on catwalks, in magazines and on the streets. You might not feel comfortable to go polka dot all over but you can wear at least an accessory or a subtle touch of this print. Go for an oversized polka dot scarf or a pair of cute polka-dot print pumps. The dots come in all shapes and sizes, they are fun, cheerful, a bit retro and sassy. What is great about this trend is that it doesn't address to a certain age group. A young fashionista can wear it in colorful colors, while older women can keep it classic in neutral tones. For example, polka dots in navy and white, brown and cream or beige and black are timeless. Are you going to add some dots on your shopping list?

From pretty day dresses to sensual night gowns, lace should be your fashion mantra this season. It is insanely gorgeous, romantic, sexy and feminine. You can wrap yourself entirely in this heavenly fabric or just use it as an accent. For instance, you could pair a lace clutch or shoes with a solid black dress. One of the most popular, and easiest, ways to incorporate lace into your look is through accessories. You can wear lace at breakfast and dinner. Just because some consider it very sophisticated it doesn’t mean it can’t be transformed for a day look if you choose warm neutral tones like beige or rose or even strong playful colors. Louis Vuitton 2012 collection is full of lace that can be suitable for an everyday juvenile look. Save the black lace for night. For a sexy look pair a black lace top with leather pants or lace stockings with a leader dress and a statement ring. Don’t combine many lace types and different lace colors and don’t go too sheer; that was inadequate even for Madonna at Vanity Fair Oscars Party 2011.

We all like classic décolletages but sometimes it gets boring. Here's the alternative of 2012: one shoulder asymmetry. This trend is what you need for summer. You can wear it on the beach and even in the evening. Adding an elegant brooch on the shoulder will transform a plain dress into a statement. If there's a lot of volume on top keep the dress short. Keep your look simple. If you want to wear jewelry consider bangles and rings but no necklaces. You don't want a necklace competing with your neckline! Pair your dress/top with a strapless bra and avoid layering clothes when wearing a one-shoulder dress. This trend is meant to be seen, not covered in layers. And one last advice: wear your hair up!

However, Isaac Mizrahi wishes the one-shoulder trend to go away, powerful names in fashion industry like Ashley Isham, Matthew Williamson, Emilio Pucci, Carolina Herrera, Gianni Versace, Lanvin, Roccobarocco, Bottega Veneta, Romona Keveza, Gucci and Temperley London proved that this trend is here to stay. A one-shoulder dress is something a little less cliché but equally sensual and I don't agree at all with Isaac Mizrahi who thinks that "we have reverted to caveman times" . Taking inspiration from the past is something that designers have done before and will always do. It is great that we can take elements from a different era and adapt them for our modern times. Shoulders are pretty universally attractive, so why not show them off?

Peplums are big this season. They are being used like never before. They haven’t been as trendy since they first appeared in the mid-19th century. By the end of the 1940s every woman embraced this new trend. After the war, Chanel introduced all sorts of peplums attached to jackets and combined with narrow pencil skirts, slowly creating the 50's glamorous look. Peplums are meant to flatter your waist. It doesn't really matter if this piece of fabric is attached to a skirt, dress, blouse or coat, the effect is the same: an exaggerated hourglass shape. If you have a flat, straight figure this will definitely add some shape, giving the illusion of hips and curves and if you are a bit curvy, choosing the right peplums will define your waist. Break from the "safe" look and try soft ruffle peplums for the day and something very dramatic sharp-edged for a night out or a dinner. Avoid peplums that add unwanted volume and don't even think of wearing peplums without high-heels. This classic trend can make you look sexy and classy at every occasion, if accessorized wisely. I personally enjoy the revival of the peplums and can't wait to add a few into my closet. It creates a a veritable ladylike shape.  What do you think about this trend? Hot or Not?

Designers and design houses like Doo.Ri, Yigal Azrouël, Diane von Furstenberg, Bebe, Fendi, are offering up lots of whites in their collections and this trend isn't going anywhere soon. White pieces are modern must-haves and are perfect for every occasion: a garden party, a cocktail on the beach and even for a regular day/night in the city. White is a bright and versatile color. It is more than casual but less than formal. This is why I think it is amazing. If you decide to go monochromatic, adding some layers of different textures will make an ensemble very chic. You can always bright up a "little white dress" with some solid color accessories. Don't worry if you want to combine two or three shades of white. That is permissible and it gives depth. All in all, are you going to rock this trend?

A piece of clothing doesn’t need to reflect balance in order to be beautiful. To prove that, spring 2012 is introducing: “the asymmetrical hem”. Asymmetry is the absence and the violation of symmetry; it is romantic, bohemian, fun, sexy and daring. It might seem something recently discovered but it is very old actually. The asymmetric concept can be traced back to ancient times. Brands like Vera Wang, Anna Sui, Christian Dior, Asos, Nasty Gal, Jason Wu, Gyvenchy, Jo No Fui, Barbara Bui, Kevork Kiledjian and many many others played with cuts and infused the runways with handkerchief, skewed and diagonal-cut hemlines. In other words, there is something for everybody, no matter your type of body or tastes. Go for a length, cut and style that flatter your legs and make them look longer. For a refined look, keep your accessories to minimal and let the asymmetry of your dress be the center of attention.

Metallic fabrics are super trendy right now and popping up on everywhere, especially on the red carpet. I don't know about you, but I am obsessed with glittering little details and shiny fabrics. If you love this trend as much as I do, 2012 is definitely the time to shine! Metallic colors go well with every skin tone but if you are very tanned a gold dress will maximize the effect and a silver or chrome will look divine on white flesh. If you wear gold try a sun kissed makeup and healthy glowing tanned skin. If you skin is white and you choose a silver dress, red lipstick and black eyeliner will transform you into a Hollywood star of the 50's.This look is meant to capture the attention and to stand out. Pair it with minimal accessories and simple heels. For the shoes, you might consider natural, nude tones or dark ones. Keep your entire outfit royal looking and go for ruby reds, emerald greens and royal blues. This is also a good advice when you are picking the clutch and jewelry.
